COUNTDOWN TO 2000
By Debbora Wiles
We have all heard the talk about problems of Y2K, some of it is fairly vague lumping it with mear "computer
problems" that are unable to recognise the year 2000. Some are not worred at all and say everyone will be ready.
But what does it really mean to your family?
I got a notice in my snail mail last week that came with my power bill. A nifty little flyer enclosed talked about
Y2K problem with the power company computers. The colorful flyer roughly said that the Y2K computer
reprogamming was progressing "on schedule" and that 50% of the work was already done. They were projecting
the completion of the reprogramming in June with testing to begin sometime in late August. I sat back stunned,
they were allowing only a 4 month window for testing their system. To me this was a very frightening thing.
Anyone that has ever tried to work the glitches out of their stubborn computer may worry too. But what about an
entire network of nationwide computers numbering perhaps in the thousands. Like power companies and phone
services and GOVENMENT services with all their red tape... My thoughts stopped cold.... I think we are going to
be in deep trouble when the time comes.
How so? Just think about computer systems we use everyday without a second thought. Let's look at a few. A
trip to the local grocery store is complex set of interacting computers. It is NOT just the cash registers that will
be effected, but also the ordering network, the price changing network, the shipping network, and the even the
employee time clock. In this linkage of computers, just ONE stubborn computer in the network is enough to
throw off the whole system off because they are ALL INTER LINKED. Now, lets look at that. Lets say your local
grocery store orders coffee based on an automated system of sales at the cash register. Automated cash registers
tabulations say that your store sells 50 cases a week of coffee and an order for the next weeks coffee goes in
automatically. Only there is a problem, the coffee distributors computer is not updated for the year 2000, so it
doesn't get that order. The end result is a coffee shortage of some brands nationwide. Now take that and multiply
it time about 2 million items the average grocery store carries and you are looking at a very interesting problem.
No, you are NOT going to go into a store and see every item gone...what you will see is some of the MAJOR items
and specialty items go into shortage, those that are computer automated or linked by automated computer
systems.
Now think about how many systems are tied into computer networks, like gas pumps at the local convienance
store, telephone networks, banking networks, stockmarket networks, online networks, shipping and postage
networks, hospital and pharmacy networks and the list goes on and on. You might say that not everything is
computer automated. This is true, but lets look at one thing. Let's say that your local drug store is a simple
operation, other than an electric cash register, telephone and a few simple electric things everything is done by
hand. Lets say you go in to get your high blood pressure medicine filled. The pharmacy has to call your insurance
company or Doctor's office to get approval...but THEIR system is down. What will do do then?
In a nut shell, a great deal of what we use and buy every day is not computer sensitive...but many of the major
commodities and interlinking sytems like shipping services, phone services and such are. Break just one of the
links and the whole system goes down. How will all of this may effect you may depend on just how well you prepare
yourself for it. So what do you need to do to prepare YOUR family?
There are several great sites on the net that talk about this and I will list a few at the end of this article. But to get
you started here is a basic list that you need to get started on, NOW.
1. Put back about $2,000.00 in cash. (Credit cards & checks and ATM's just might be worthless)
2. Stockpile about 3 to 6 months of medicines. (insurance and doctor pipelines might go down)
3. Stockpile about 3 to 6 months of non-parishable food items. Choose items that you know are linked to major
companys that ARE automated. (Coffee, sugar, flour, dry milk, grains like cerals, rice, pasta, canned veggies, fruits
and meats)
4. Stockpile simple medical supplies. (like bandaids, contact, alcohol, peroxide, allery medicines etc.) (The
demand may out strip the supplies if shipping company's go down)
5. Lay in a month or mores supply of drinking water. (Many water systems are automated)
6. Make alternative plans for non-electric heating (firewood, Karosene heaters), alternative cooking equipment
(Bar B Q grill or Coleman stove, grates for the fireplace) and lighting (hurricane lamps and oil and candles). (Power
companies are automated and well as heating oil and gas lines) Remember this problem will start December 31 or
sooner - in the winter months.
7. Lay in supplies for other needs you might have, like baby formula, diapers, pet medicine & food, kitty litter, bird
seed, vacuum cleaner bags, cleaning products and other speciality items that may go quickly if shipping goes down.
8. Do a check list and schedule repairs on appliances, computers and auto's early. (If shipping goes down you
may not be able to get parts for MONTHS...you will be stranded without transportation)
9. Check over and buy your winter wardrobe and winter bedding items needs early. If heating systems go out
there will be a run on these items that will create a shorage.
10. Look into getting a generator big enough to run your refridgerator or furnace if you live in a rual area. Rual
area's have low priority with power companys, the highest population always gets priority.
These things you need to start doing now. Some are predicting problems in shipping and shortages as early as
August for computers that work 6 months in advance. You can do this nearly painlessly buy adding a few items to
your grocery or shopping list every week. But you need to do it NOW...the countdown to the year 2000 has begun
and the clock is ticking.....

NEW SHARON GREEN AUCTION
Beginning today there are some new items up on the auction block for Sharon Green fans. The first item is a the
NUMBER ONE print of Tanderon jacket cover art. This NUMBER ONE limited addition print is signed by both
the artist and Sharon Green on the outer double mat. It is encased in a 16 X 20 inch glassed, gold leaf frame and is
ready to hang.
Limited addition prints are not like other prints you buy at the local department store. Limited addition prints that
are counter signed and numbered grow more valuable with time, like first run baseball cards or signed and number
tiffany crystal. Imagine having the first print of a Pacasso counter signed by Hemmingway...what would it be worth
today? Because these prints are limited, only a lucky few can get them and once the last print is sold, there are no
more. Value on a print is determined by the number, the higher the number the more valuable the print. In
addition to that, if it is counter signed by the artist and the writer this also increases it's value. To start the bidding
on this beautifully framed 16 X 20" NUMBER ONE print of Tanderon, will start at $25.00 (that is half the cost of
the FRAME) and go up in $10.00 increments. Bidding will stop at midnight on January 30th.
The next items on the auction block are next 4 prints numbers 2 - 5 of Tanderon. All are counter signed by the
artist and Sharon Green. These prints are 11 X 17" unmatted and unframed and will be shipped to you (insured) in
a tube. The 2 - 5 prints will start at $10.00 and go up in $10.00 increments. It is important that you state which
print you are bidding on print, 2, 3, 4 or 5 or the Framed first print. Bidding concludes at midnight January 30th.
Your bidding status is always confirmed. The print may be viewed at: Other Fantasy Art , to view a picture of the
framed print hit, reply and request the Framed Tanderon.
