Sci-fi Convention Terms and Abbreviations


A
AD&D :Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. A Role playing game.

AGoH : Artist Guest Of Honor. Usually the celebrity artist guest.

ART SHOW : A secured room of a convention where paintings, prints, sculpture, and all forms of art are displayed on peg board panels or tables to be bought or take bids from buyers.

ARTIST KIT or PACKET : A package of information that includes Art Show rules, hanging fees, showing fees, panel fee, artist and convention percentages. Plus a page of that conventions bid sheets (usually 4 to a page, that the artist can photocopy and attach to their art) and an inventory sheet to list the art submitted to the art show.

BADGE : A decorated or colored name tag that is worn in plain view at all times. It allows convention members access to convention sponsored events

CON : A shortened word for CONvention. Many use this as part of their name like DragonCON.

CGoH : Celebrity Guest of Honor. Usually a TV or Film guest or any high profile guest.

DEALER'S SHOWROOM : An area of the convention where tables are rented to merchants who then sell goods or services to convention attendees.

FGoH : FAN Guest Of Honor. Usually a fan selected by the convention that is given a free membership or more to reward that person for their dedication and hard work at conventions.

FANDOM : A term used to describe fans that attend, work or participate in promoting, leaning about or attending things for one or more areas of a convention.

GoH : Guest of Honor.

GOPHER : A person who run errands for and helps out at the convention, often volunteers.

GOD : General Operations Department. A person or team charged with the smooth running and general operations of the convention from setup to breakdown.

HOSPITALITY ROOM OR SUITE : A place usually sponsored by the convention or another convention where people can go to get food or soft drinks for free or with a donation.

HOST HOTEL : The actual hotel where convention events take place, or the place where most the convention guests are staying.

LARP : Live Action Role Playing. A Live Action game that can be played in costume that includes playing out the role of an assigned character against other characters. Usually played within the hotel and grounds, but can expand to include a whole town.

LAV : Live Action Vampire

MASQUERADE : A theme a dance attending with costumes or a Costume contest.

MEMBERSHIP : To belong to the conventions group. Usually by paying a membership fee. Most memberships include, entry into the convention and most events for no additional fee, e-mail and or paper newsletters for a year. Some conventions allow a member to vote on convention issues.

MC : Master Of Ceremonies.
MGoH : Media Guest Of Honor. Usually a high profile guest that works in film or TV.

PEACE BONDING : A piece of wire or string tied around a sword to secure it in the scarboard or a tied about weapon worn with a costume to prevent the careless drawing or use of that weapon. Usually done by security at a convention.

PANEL : One or more convention guests gathered in a room to discuss a specific topic, event or issue with convention guests. Usually a topic is listed in the program and Questions are asked by the audience.

Q

Q & A : Question and Answer session. Usually a time where a convention guest answers questions from the audience.

REGISTRATION : A central area where convention goers pay to get in, get their badges, programs and sometime buy T-shirt. A place get to information.

ROOM PARTY : A party held in a hotel room. Can be any theme, from snack bar to offering alcoholic drinks and dance music. Party Rooms must be reserved well in advance on a special floor. Other conventions often sponsor room parties.

RPG : Role Playing Game. A game where preset characters or created characters play spontaneously with other characters in the frame of setting and situation. Usually played at a table.

SASE : Self Addressed STAMPED Envelope.

SECURITY : A team of trained convention people charged with keeping order at a convention and providing security for celebrity guests.

SEMINAR : Usually a program that includes a lecture, film or slides or demo's on a specific topic followed by a Question and Answer session.

SIGNING: A time and place where celebrity guests autograph things or sell autographed things

TM : Toast Master

VIDEO ROOM : A room where films are shown nearly around the clock for fans. Many rooms are sponsored by an organization and will have a specific theme. Like Horror, or Star Wars, UFO's etc.

WGoH : Writer Guest Of Honor.

WORKSHOP : A hands on learning program where the attendee works with materials and often takes home things that are made or learned.
